All of us were shocked and heartbroken to hear the news that on August 5th, at the age of 44, Alland had died suddenly of natural causes at his home in Berlin. His influence on San Francisco's music scene was immeasurable, and on that day the world not only lost a uniquely talented artist, but many of us lost a treasured friend.
